John Wilcher for Sheriff –

Sheriff John Wilcher has made a lifelong commitment to Chatham County and Savannah.  Many of you may know him because he grew up here, went to school here, and worked for more than 40 years in the Sheriff’s Office — retiring with the rank of Colonel in 2014.

John has worked in most areas of law enforcement including as the former Jail Administrator, managing jail operations housing more than 1,500 inmates for Chatham County. He has more than 3,000 hours of advanced and specialized training throughout his career.

John has been recognized for outstanding service to our community with the following awards:   Georgia Sheriff’s Association Excellence Award, the Edward Hester Award from the Savannah Bar Association, and the Trial Lawyer’s Award.

John served in the U. S. Navy from 1961 – 1964, and in the U. S. Army Reserve from 1964 – 1967. He also served as a volunteer for the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Home and has supervised the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Poker Run for 13 years, helping raise more than $300,000 for the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Home.

John is married to his wife, Dorothy, and they have two grown children.
